Johnson 175 Powerpack Problem?

I have a Johnson 175 that I got last summer. It would run for about 10 minutes and then cut out completely. It could then be restarted or just cut the throttle back to about 1800-2000 rpm and it would run all day. Fuel pump was weak but a new pump did not correct the problem. I thought it maybe an ignition problem but winter came before I could take it to the lake, hang a timing light on both banks to verify.
Now my problem. The model number is VJ 175 SLESE which indicates a 1990 model. I bought a SELROC manual to learn more about this motor and found that they do not show a diagram for a '90 model with the CDI 113-3865ignition.
This motor is on a Nitro Tracker and I am wondering if they had a special build with the advanced ignition. If so where would I look for more information. I now suspect that the run-slow may be causing my problem. Head temperatures never exceeded 140 measured with an infrared thermometer but it could be a bad sensor. Cooling water pressure is ok according to the dash gauge and there are no buzzers sounding but since this boat has now sat for three winters wiring connections may be suspect.

start with the basic, first by the Johnson manual, and give the seloc to some one you do not like. compression and spark test, then spark test immediately when it acts up with induction timing light.

Squeeze the primer bulb to see it that makes a difference.

The fuel pump may be sucking air in at the fuel connector, the upper carb could be running out of fuel.
