Basically the way they were rated. The 1985 235 was rated at the flywheel and the 86 175 was rated at the prop. They were rated at slightly different rpm ranges too.

Now, you have to also consider the NMMA's % rule on advertised horsepower. The 235 rating was a bit optomistic and the 175 rating was a little consertive. At any rate, if you put both on a true dyno they'll come out within about 5 hp of each other at the same rpm.

Dhadley - That's a 23% difference from flywheel to prop. I wouldn't expect to see more than 5-10% loss through the train. I think the sales folks must of picked out 235 because it had a nice ring!!!!! Must of been a competing motor out for release with 225 rating.

Exactly. One rating was very happy and the other was sort of realistic. Like I said, put both on a true dyno at the same rpm and they're real close.
