I have a FD15 which is a 61 model 18hp (correct?) and have found some spare parts. I understand (Was told by the seller) that the 18,20, and 25 hp models from 64-72 will all interchange as far as coils, carb, rewind assembly, etc. Is there any truth to this? Would they also work on my motor? I would like to get these parts because there cheap but I don't nned something I can't use. Thanks gang.

Hi Kenneth,
There is some truth to that statement. Only item that is NOT the same from '61-'72 is the carburetor. I think 1969 was the change-over year to the bigger carb. The ignitions will swap out, but some linkage might be a little different. Recoils might use a different casting, but the functionality is the same. Lower units on the later motors are improved, but again, functionality is the same. You can swap the units as a whole, but some parts within are different.
If you're looking for ignition components, simply buy new parts. For under $50.00 you can replace everything under the flywheel and not have to worry about it again in your lifetime, save for an occasional point cleaning and gapping.
My other recommendation is to install a new waerpump impeller and if you're up to it, a seal kit. All these parts should be available through an OMC (Johnson or Evinrude) dealer, NAPA, WestMarine, etc. NAPA, WestMarine, etc. use Sierra aftermarket parts which I've found to be of good quality... Might have to grab the NAPA guy by the lapels to get him to find the 600+ page Marine Parts catalog, as many stores don't even know they have one...
- Scott
