motor has the serial plate missing, is there any other way of identifying the year., the person i bought it from thought it was a 73, The original color is a off white. I believe it is from 68 to 73. It has electric start., has 2 stars on the rear cover, and the sea horse emblem on the side near the top front. This motor was painted over. Under the cover, is hp specks sticker with 18 listed on it.,,, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Hammer

The latest I see the 18 HP was made is 1965. Could be wrong though. Others who know alot more than me about those oldies will be along...Meanwhile, you might want to look around here:

I agree with Rickdb1boat. 18hp disappeared from the Johnson lineup in '66 although it continued in the Evinrude linup into the early 70s. Off white suggests somewhere between '59 and '66. Go through those catalogs Rick pointed you toward and see if you can get a visual ID, even if you have to go off the emblems.

Yes you're right, and I agree that going by the cover is probably the worst way to determine the year. But it also sounds like we don't have much more to go on.

I'm assuming the off-white he's seeing is where the engine hasn't been repainted. Often under the hood on a typical rattle-can job. If it's originally white it probably isn't an Evinrude/ Pre '59 engines were red (and earlier green) but also had all-metal covers. Post '65, Johnsons were various colour greens until the late 70s.

Don't forget to check the welsh plug - a convex quarter sized soft metal plug pressed into the engine block usually near the spark plug end. Occassionally that will have a model number in addition to a serial number.

Thanks alot Rick for that web site, I believe its to be a 63',just by looking at the various motor hoods. There doesnt seem to be much of a major change in the motors over the 63 to 73 years. I want to get this motor running as the only problem is a frozen cylinder. The lower unit was completely rebuilt by a johnson dealer , some years back.. and has been sitting for a long time.
If you come along any more info , let me know and again thank you. mike
