Hello i have a johnson 18 hp model number FD-14. My question is that i can get it started just fine and throttle it up but i have to leave the choke on. I am new to fixing 2 cycles but my friends say it something simple. I am not sure if i need to rebuild the carb or a new fuel pump or a new head gasket or if i need to check the carb needle settings. If i need to check the needle settings anyone have the default settings. Any ideas on this would be great.

One more question is this engine came from a boat that had a helm and i dont have one so i need the arm that comes out and steers and throtles up the boat any qlue on what it is called and where i can get one at please and thank you.

usually is a dirty carb when you have to choke it to pull fuel,,,,,clean it,inspect gaskets, make sure all fuel / air capillaries are garbage free

Yes, it sounds like you need to clean your carb. And it's the tiller arm that you are looking for. Try used outboard places. Search on this forum. Lists of places have been posted before...

Re: Johnson 18hp FD-14 nees to stay choked to stay running

I have a newly purchased similar motor (1956 Johnson 15 HP FDL-10) and have been doing a little research on it as far as tune-up etc. From what I've found, the initial carb settings are:
Low Speed- Back out 1 and 1/4 to 1 and 1/2 turns from gently seated
High Speed- Back out 3/4 turn from gently seated
Packing nuts may have to be tightened or packing replaced to keep needles from turning while running due to vibration.
I'm having the same problem with mine....stalls if choke is pushed in....but haven't had time to work on it yet. I was just happy it started and ran as good as it did :D
Would be interested in hearing if you find a solution to your problem.
