Do you think I should replace the head gasket on my RDE-17 motor as a preventative measure? The compression is fine and I have no reason to think there is anything wrong with it.

I am concerned that it may fail and score the cylinder just because it is old. Is this common in these outboards?

I would be more inclined to change it but I can't find one cheaper than $40 plus $8 shipping from maxrules. No one else seems to have it at all. Does anyone know a cheaper source?

I normally go by the rule if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But if you want one, the after market (sierra), is 18-3865. Check with your local auto parts store, some of them can get sierra parts.
Is the PN for your gasket 302583, if so the above PN is correct.

That is the correct part number for my head gasket.

That's great, I just googled the Sierra part number and found several sites that have this for $15-$20.

If I can't get it thru my local Napa, I know now where to get it online.

Thanks so much!

You're welcome. The NAPA store in my area can get Sierra parts without any problems.
