I would appreciate a little help if anyone could. I just got a 1959 johnson 35hp. I got a little help from the forum on replacing my coils and it ran like a champ for a while when I first took it out then went to one cylinder. The spark plug wire came out where it attaches to the coil. Screwed it back in felt good and snug and then second time I went out same thing happened again. Just wondering what the best thing to do would be. I was thingking about just putting some silicone around the fitting but if there is a better way to keep it from coming out I would love to know what it is. Thanks fellas.

I wouldn't think that you should have to glue the wire to the coil or it would have been glued in from the factory. Something is not right since the new coil was put on. Is the wire long enough to allow the armature plate to move it's full range of movement without pulling it loose? On my '58, there is a small plate with a screw that holds the two plug wires tightly where they exit the armature plate. Does your '59 have this? Is it tight?

Hi lbstix<br />These wires can and should be a tight fit. Sounds to me like you tried to cut a few corners. You need to remove the coil remove the spark wire from the stator plate. I use a dab of vasoline on the end of the wire. Slide the little rubber boot on the wire. Poke the wire into the coil all the way. Then slide the boot over the end of the coil. Reinstall the coil and wire as a unit. Be sure all clamp points are used and snug. If you try and just stick the coil on the end of the wire you will alway have this problem.

According to my SELOC manual a coat of rubber seal should be applied once the lead is fitted to the coil, the photo shows OMC Neoprene Dip being used. It also mentions a rubber boot may be fitted.

I think alcan's post is right on here. Also, before inserting the spark plug wire into the coil, check the stab inside the coil hole. Make sure it's straight. I have run across a few that have been bent to one side.

Re: Johnson 1959 coil and spark plug wire

Thanks for the replies. I did loosen the spark plug wires and take some slack so there would be room for play but maybe not enough. I will try it again and just really screw it in and maybe put some of that neoprene dip on it like the manual says. The other coil is holding fine, but on the one that I am having the problem with there is no boot( it did not come in the package like the other coil had). Hopefully it will work this time. At least I know what the problem is so I should consider my self lucky compared to other guys trying to fix their motor. Thanks again
