Hi All,
I have been tinkering on an old 1957 owens fiberglass boat. The Bodywork, Paint and Electrical are all new down to carpet. The only thing not new is the seats, steering and motor that is a 1969 Johnson 33HP.
I took the boat out on the lake after doing a hose test at home. after the boat ran slow through the no wake channel at a slow idle (about 8 Min.) the boat died and I could not get it started unless I let it sit for about 15 Min. to cool. Then it would only run slow, if I gave it even a little throttle it would run rough then die again. I had to call a friend to come tow me in. the next day I put the motor under a new trash can full of water. The motor ran great for about five min. of idle, adjusting and full trottle. Then died again and I could not get it started. As a side note the motor got very HOT! I am waiting for a maintenance and repair manual I ordered to come in before doing a carb rebuild. Before going out I changed the plugs and they look good.

Anyone have any guesses on what may be happening?

Ever heard of a water pump impeller? On that engine you should have water shooting out above the waterline in the rear of the exhaust housing IF it's pumping. Hopefully you have not scored the cylinders too bad overheating it.

Thanks for the heads up! I will not start the motor until I get the manual and check the impeller. and No i did not know about the impeller. This is all new to me. I fly plains this is my first boat. I just bought it for my son as a sand box when i got a crazy idea i could build a boat.

All I can say is, I will try my best and may get it right or screw it up good!

Welcome Jerry, indian giver, take the Nicks sand box. cute idea. lets start with the basics, do and compression check, then a spark check. record and post the results. do this before ordering any parts. let's see if with have a viable base to work with. you definately need to rebuild the water pump,(impeller), and i have a inkling, that the coils or power pack is heating up and failing, causing the hard starting. you can look up the engine diagrams and parts list here, just follow the prompts

Please don't criticize me for saying this because I mean it in a good spirit. But you say you are a pilot. I know you wouldn't take off in a plane that wasn't perfect. Going out in a boat with a questionable motor isn't much smarter. OK, so you don't have so far to fall, but it still can ruin your day. Glad you are determined to get it right.
