I have a long shaft 20hp johnson, 1972. It has apparently been made from a short shaft to a long shaft at some point in its life. I just want some opinions on this. I think all I should need to convert it back to the short shaft is a short drive shaft, water tube, and shift linkage. Is this correct? I would have to take out the 5" extension on the midsection, install the already mentioned parts, and wallah! I just want to know if I am thinking this through right. changing the drive shaft doesn't scare me. changing the shift rod doesnt scare me. But I have never had a water tube out. How are they connected to the bottom side of the powerhead? Is this hard to change out? I know what most of you are thinking, this isn't cost effective. Well I know a guy with a whole pile of old parts motors, most of which I can buy for $25 a piece. More than likely he has a short shaft motor from that era that will work. Talk to me guys, tell me if I have thought this through or if there is something I am overlooking.

You have your head together. Without looking, the water tube probably sticks up into a rubber grommet in the midsection housing.

if that is the case, I should be able to just pull out the long water tube and insert the short one, correct? I was just wanting to make sure ther was no mechanical connection up there under the powerhead that was going to be a pain in the neck to get to.

OK, I just looked to make sure I'm not leading you astray. Yes it just pokes up into a rubber grommet. Same kind of grommet as in the water pump housing.

There is another part that you didn't mention. There is a round tube around the drive shaft, between the water pump and exhaust housing. There are long and short versions of it, so you need one of those too.

I noticed that tube when I changed the water pump on my 35. Made of plastic. Do you know what the purpose of that tube is?
