I have a long shaft 20hp johnson, 1972. It has apparently been made from a short shaft to a long shaft at some point in its life. I just want some opinions on this. I think all I should need to convert it back to the short shaft is a short drive shaft, water tube, and shift linkage. Is this correct? I would have to take out the 5" extension on the midsection, install the already mentioned parts, and wallah! I just want to know if I am thinking this through right. changing the drive shaft doesn't scare me. changing the shift rod doesnt scare me. But I have never had a water tube out. How are they connected to the bottom side of the powerhead? Is this hard to change out? I know what most of you are thinking, this isn't cost effective. Well I know a guy with a whole pile of old parts motors, most of which I can buy for $25 a piece. More than likely he has a short shaft motor from that era that will work. Talk to me guys, tell me if I have thought this through or if there is something I am overlooking.
