johnson 1974 70 hp thermostat

my thermo stat opens at 160 in the boiling pot test the head after a hour of idling in a trash can never get over 130 is this normal for the head temp?and the t-stat opening temp?

Doesn't sound out of the park.
The thermostats I'm used to seeing on Evinrudes open at 143 F.
130 in a barrel is reasonable. You'll be higher at constant high throttle.
I would expect you to be able to touch the block and feel hot, but not enough to burn you at the touch; 130 - 150 F(?).

thanks for the reply its barable with the hand test just wanna make sure im good when i go out this is a new to me motor and i have been doing work on it for 2 weeks getting it up to par

i also have a 1973 evinrude 65 hp that i have had on the water numerable times and at idle for a hour in the barrel it never really get over 130 either
