I have a 1979 Johnson 175 that has been steadily deteriorating in performance. I had it in the water last week and it was very hard to start and ran poorly. I pulled all of the plugs the next day and found one plug with the gap shorted. I regapped the plug and it ran a little better, but not perfect.

I took a look at the plugs better today and found that the gap shorted again (electrode bent into center conductor) on the middle cylinder, starboard side. I pulled the head and found the piston loose with many pockmarks on both it and the head. Also, the bottom cylinder starboard side had a few marks in it and a piece of metal that looked like part of a ring. Both cylinders have a couple of scratches in them. The other 4 cylinders appear to be OK.

I am fairly handy but have never pulled an engine down this far. I feel certain that it will need at least 2 pistons and rings, as well as a starboard head and gaskets. It very likely will also need to be rebored.

Is this something that I should attempt? Is the motor worth this, or should it be trashed? Other than this, it is in good shape. How hard is it to replace 2 pistons? How about rebooring the cylinders?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Rick

Re: Johnson 1979 175HP has 2 bad cylinders

I got a quote today to reboor the entire block, replace all pistons and connecting rods for $2000. Does this sound like a good deal?

The shop also has an 1999 Evinrude 200hp for around $4000. It might be a possibility, however it weighs about 150lbs more, which might upset the balance on a 18 foot boat.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Rick

$2,000.00 does not seem to bad if the crank is OK.

Do some serious research before doing anything on the 200 as OMC had some serious design and quality control problems for motors in that period. Go to the search at the top of the page and enter "1999 200hp Evinrude" for a search arguement.

The mechanic feels pretty good about the crank, but of course he won't know until he gets in.

Thanks for the advice on the 200. I'll check the search.

Rick

Re: Johnson 1979 175HP has 2 bad cylinders

It turns out that the new motor that the shop has is a late 1990's 200HP Evinrude that is carburated. (As opposed to a FICHTS)

I also have a chance to buy a Checkmate boat, trailer, and Mercury 200HP for $3000. All are early 80's model. The motor has been completely rebuilt by the dealer.(seller). I'm not interested in the boat/trailer, but the motor is enticing.

It may be easier to have the 175 rebuilt.

Thanks
