I have a 1980 Johnson 35 hp. At Idle speed the motor runs great. Under load it misses or cuts out off and on. When I tilt the motor gas runs out of the carb. I think the float is sticking but would that cause the motor to cut out. I pulled the plugs and the bottom plug looked ok and the top plug was slightly wet but not soaked. Before I tear half the motor apart to get the carb off I want to make sure that is the problem. I am new at boating but mechanicaly inclined.

Sounds like you are on the right track, you might chck and make sure that you have fire on that cylinder first, just to be safe.

Thanks Nathan in Arkansas. The motor runs strong. But while I am going across the water it cuts out about every 100 to 200 yards running about 20 mph. After turning off the motor and fishing for awhile it will start up and Idle fine but when I go to take off quick it wants to stall. I give it gas lightly and it takes off fine but cuts out off and on while under load. Thanks again for your info.

Hi tmzg 29

It sounds like some sort of fuel delivery problem.
Like: Bad fuel pump - try to squeze bulb when problem appears.

Cloused anti vent screw - check.

Fuel filter in tank blocked by debris - try to borrow tank from someone.

Hose, bulb or gaskets taking air through leak - buy a new - cheap solution.

Or eventually kill wire worn through to ground somewhere - follow wire and check.

Well so far I pulled the fuel filter apart that is mounted on the side of the motor and found dirt and red plastic in the screen from the plastic red fuel tank. I then pulled off the inline fuel filter that is past the one on the motor and found smaller pieces of red plastic but not a bunch. So I might have some of the same in the bowl which is causing the float to stick. Will have to tear off the starter and half of the other bolt on's to get the carb off to clean the bowl out. HE HE HE HE. Will replace the tank and the bulb and go from there. Might as wel rebuild the carb while it is apart. Any good places to get rebuild kits for this carb.
Again thanks for everyone's help in my pain.
