I'm looking at buying a used 1997 25 hp Johnson two stroke that owner claims to be a good motor. I've had two of these Johnsons before and they were very good motors but they were two cylinder models and this one is a three cylinder model. Anyone have any suggestions as to the reliability of these motors???? Owner stated it needed carb work and it scares me because it has three carbs. He has adjusted the asking price because of this issue so I just was wondering if anyone knows of problems.

First thing to do is a compression test. If that's okay and if it still has the oiling system on it get rid of it and mix your fuel 50:1. The oiling system on those motors sucked and caused some blown p/h's. It was actually a very good mtr and just to bad they don't make them anymore.

Thanks, boobie. I will check the compression as well as listen to it run. Does this model have three carbs?

Yes it does. Go to shop.evinrude.com and look the mtr up. They have good parts diagrams and you should find out anything you want to know about fuel system or anything else.

Back in Norway we used to cal the V-3. They are in principle 1/2 looper 60 degree V-6 engines. Apart from the oil system mentioned, they had a bit of problems with power packs and to get the power where you want it and a decent economy and performance, you need to run with the 4-blade props designed for them.
