Hey. This johnson has 2 issues (that are linked im fairly certain...).

1. It has a hard time getting into getting into forward gear, but once it's there...it stays and does not pop out under throttle, no noises. (this should NOT be the clutch dog, or the forward gear then should it?)

2. It sometimes pops into fwd from neutral. doh.

Is there shift a linkage setting for the shift lever that could be set wrong making it hard to get into forward, AS WELL as it sometime jumping into forward from Neutral?

puzzled.

Ryan.

What year is this motor so we can take a look at the setup.

Is it tiller or on forward controls?

Should never, ever just jump into gear unless the clutch dog is riding against the gear and carrying pressure against it.

Does it go smoothly into reverse?

Well, it's not mine ...yet...so this info is not first hand. But here is the info that the seller is telling me. The part I don't get is how it pops INTO fwd...normally I see posts about shifting out of gear not into gear! He thinks its something to do with the gear assembly but how the heck would you get the dog to be pressed up against the fwd gear?

AND why would you have trouble putting it into fwd gear then if you've got to have the dog so close to the fwd gear? as he says it's also finicky.

I think he'll take 1300 for the boat/motor and I know I can sell it for 2500 here so that's why im looking at it. I'll get the model number of the motor from him. Image link follows.

Here are his comments, clear as mud:
"The motor will pop into gear while in Nuetral, it does shift but sometimes you have to play/jimmy with the gear lever to get into gear.. Ive talked to a Boat motor tech, and he said it could be one of two problems because i did not know which it was i did not get a quote $$ to fix it, either linkage in the shaft, or linkage/gear inside the motor, ive since checked the shaft linkage and its not the shaft. To put this into perspective we've used it like this for last two years and has yet to strand us. However could be fixxed, and the boat is sound to the best of my knowledge. The boat/motor will be sold as is, and 1st $1500 will take it away. "

And the boat photos for fun:

And the rest of the pics he sent me are here:

I noticed from the one top down pic of the motor that the black plastic carb cover is missing. Or do they make carbs that don't have the black plastic carbs on them for the 80's J 20's?

I have 2 already and they both have the black carb covers.

Have you actually looked at this setup?

Obviously the lower has issues. Possible selector damaged. No mention of functional reverse. Possibly took a hard hit. May be cheaper to replace lower than repair.

The boat looks to have a hefty bend in the forward hull. probably from down force on a roller. Even to attempt to repair, the flooring will have to be removed.

Does the trailer come with the deal? If not I work him down considerably.
