Hi boat guy.

Best for you to post this question over in the Johnson/Evinrude repair forum. That is where the tech guys hang out, and will get more exposure from the guys who know.

Are you saying you have do both to keep the engine running?

If pumping the primer keeps the engine alive this is indicative of an ailing fuel pump and it needs rebuilding.

If choking the engine saves it this means the carbs are dirty.

You are there now.
Move from forum to forum by using the drop down menu at the lower right of this page, it is labeled "Move to Other Topic."

You initially posted in the discussion/non-repair forum, you are in the right place now. No problem.

As andy stated above, time to rebuild the fuel pump.
Pretty easy, just pick up a fuel pump kit from the dealer.
