johnson 200 outboard maintanence

need to know how often do you need to over haul power head etc.I bought a 1996 wellcraft had it 2yrs i put about 200hrs on it the previous owner put about 100hrs didn"t use it much trailored it had it tuned up every spring, previous owner.I just had plugs changed and new plug wires tune up runs great should i get a hour meter ? can log running hours on my gps is that sufficient?Im thinking about changing water pump impeller and assembly dont have a problem with it pissing pretty good how long does an engine like this last usually put on about100hrs a season trying to maitain it the proper way need suggestions

Try & do the water pump every coulple of years. That is a good time to change the gear oil, plugs & thermostats.<br /><br />It would be a good idea to get the OMC shop & parts manual specific for your motor & follow the factory maintenance schedule. There are posts here of OMC motors running thousands of hours without an overhaul. If yours is like those you need not give it much thought for - - say ten years.

An hour is an hour whether it's measured with an hour meter or on your GPS. It won't get measured though if you don't turn your GPS on. Hour meters are inexpensive, easy to install, and you don't have to worry about turning the GPS on.
