I am getting ready to put the boat back out in the water and wanted to resolve an issue I had last year. The engine would not start rigt away after it had been sitting for a few days. The engine would crank but not start up. It often took me multiple attempts, many over 10 minutes of turning the key until the engine finally started. Once it started it was fine and would turn back on right away.
I lost the lanyard with the kill switch last year. I was wondering if that had anything to do with it. Is there a proper way to cold start this engine that I am doing wrong? Or is it a bigger issue than that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Buy a new lanyard?

I'm not familiar with anything newer than my 1994, I would think a 2002 would be more automatic than my "push the key to prime" setup.

I have a 2001 150 Johnson and after pumping the primer bulb until hard I turn the key the choke on mine is when you push the key in and keep pushing it in until the motor starts works every time. The choke does not stay set it is applied only when the key is pushed in.

what do you mean you lost the lanyard with the kill switch, did you disconnect it?

stating procedures:

pump fuel line bulb till hard, raise fast idle lever all the way, turn key to "on", push in on key for an 8 count, still holding key turn to start. should start, if not start from the bulb again. this time just turn key, then push in on key.

Thanks for the replies. I lost the lanyard that went over the key hole. Im not sure if this kept teh ignition pushed in or not and what is causing my problems. Not sure I am using the term kill switch properly. But the lanyard causes the engine to shut down when its pulled off.

Figures. I looked on the BRP website and do not see an OMC part# for it. Would you know what the OMC# is for the lanyard or do I need a whole new ignition?

heheh its not supposed to run without the kill lanyard inserted.
You can buy those at any marine store, cabelas , west marine etc.

Try turning the ignition key to on, but don't crank the engine.
Push the key inwards , you should hear a click at the engine as the cold start solenoid is energized. Might have to remove the engine cover to hear it.

The ones I see include several different styles in the same packet, I think they are priced around $10 with the handy rope/clip for your belt.

you must have the evinrude johnson simple kill switch all it does is turn the key to the off position when you pull it off. You can run the motor without that lanyard if you push the key in by hand all the way till you hear the choke click on and then once you get it started just let go of the key and engine will probably shut off and then dont push in on the key at all and restart it and itll run fine. But as inexpensive as they are your best bet would be go to a local marine store and they will have an universal set of kill switches for a few bucks
