I've spotted a pretty good deal on one of these 9.9 4-strokes, but wonder if there are any concerns-- e.g., issues to consider or look for. I know the company has experienced a lot of transitions and don't want to be stuck with an orphaned product.

The only thing I've heard about them is some parts are NLA and others are very expensive.

Hmmm. That's my concern. Local marina (not the mechanic or owner, but just PT help) said parts are no problem. So I'm double checking here. Has anyone experienced NLA? Wildly high prices?? (This said, I'm hearing on the Tohatsu forum that parts are becoming an issue for even more recent models, one of which I already own. Sigh.)

Get the model # and go to shop.evinrude.com and look up the mtr. That will give you an idea of prices and availabilty.

I am pretty sure the lower unit and a lot of the other parts are the same as the 95-2000ish two strokes of the same horsepower. The differences lie in the powerhead itself. That is just my guess though, have never actually owned one, just looked at them pretty heavily when I was considering repowering my Gheenoe with a four stroke.
