Having purchased a 225 j/son which now has 90 hrs on the clock i have already fitted a new p/pack and two coils, sometimes the alarm goes off with a continous tone sometimes with a manic beeping,im at a bit of a loss with the thing,it propels a 25ft speedboat i only rev it to 4000-4500.

When the alarms sound i have, good fuel pressure, clean filters ,full oil tank, excellent water pressure 25-30psi,good quicksilva tw3 oil always used.I have tried surface firing and normal plugs(gap 30 thou).

Is there anything i am missing ?

I always warm the engine up gently before use(its always 30c here anyway).

I have a 16v charge indicated(good battery and greased terminals)

The engine sounds great misses occasionally and revs drop to 3500 max.

Do i go back to mercurys?

Are johnson 97 engines fundamentally flawed?

Please answer with any quirks or operating hints on these engines, all advice gratefully received.

Cheers Borneoman.

16 volts charging is to high, should be about 14.5 volts. The regulator may be causing the high voltage. Check blocker diode located in tan wire. Diode is located between engine harness connector and engine temp sensor in tan wire. Search this board, about fly wheel magnets, upper crankshaft bearing housing bolts being loose.
