I have a 1981 Johnson 235 that was rebuilt last year before I bought it and when you put it in reverse it clicks into gear and starts moving backwards but ....when you move the throttle control forward to throttle up to go forward it doesnt click into gear until you have the throttle all the way forward and the RPMs are really high and then all of a sudden the a sudden jerk in the rear and then the boat just takes off really fast and I have to ease the throttle back to maintain control ..

It seems as if something is slipping and I am not sure if it is my throttle control or something in the engine ....

I am brand new to boating and I am not sure what kind of problem I have here...

Sounds like a shift cable has stretched. Remove the shift cable and shift by hand. If it's OK then, replace the cable.
