Johnson 25 Drive Shaft Sleeve Orientation Question

Hi again, just rebuilt the water pump on my 25hp Johnson long shaft and there's a black plastic sleeve over the driveshaft bottom section with two o-rings on either end, presumably to keep water away from the shaft?

Question is, there's asymmetry to the little collar on either end and I can't see why or how it is meant to be oriented, notch forward, back, or to either side? I didn't pay enough attention when it came off. See the picture, anyone know the answer?

You install that into the exhaust housing first.-----Think it can only go one way.----Have one apart right now and can report how it goes if it is still a mystery to you.
