Thanks the info was Good . Now my next question is ; My 1979 35 hp Johnson is a tiller model pull start , I have a motor with electric start for parts , Has any body out there added electric start ? Do I need to pull fly wheel ? If so what is the complete process ? Pete
If you want charge capability, then yes, the flywheel needs to come off so you can swap stator plates. Remove flywheel nut, install a flywheel puller (many use a harmonic balancer puller), using Grade 8, 1/4-20 bolts.
You don't need the charging if your just starting the motor with occasional running lights.
Maybe bilge pump occasionally Probably only 5 amp charge.
A good battery will do many many starts. You'll note a weak long before it is dead
If it refuses to turn over/crank you can usually rock it and get it to start a few times.
While its better to charge regularly we often would go weeks between charges.
Our standard group 24 automotive battery lasted a long time between charges and life span.
