Johnson 25 hp gearcase oil smell

Last year when i changed the lower unit oil on my 1996 Johnson 25, it was black and smelled really burnt. I attributed that to the fact that i hadn't changed it in 2 years. I just changed it again today and the oil is again black and smells terrible. What could be causing this condition?<br /><br />Drew

Hi Drew<br />If your gear oil is black and goooy and if it smells so bad that the devil wouldn't have it. It's perfect, just what you want. Try not to get too much on your clothes or the wife my disown you.

have you taken a wiff of the new oil before you put it in?
