I have an old 1979 JOhnson 25 HP and a 9.9 HP. They both jump out of fwd gear when RMPs get up to about 2K. Is there a common problem/fix for this like an adjustment or is there a major wear issue?

First off, make sure the linkage is tight. No loose components.

Otherwise, both are probably suffering from worn clutch dogs in the lower units.

The clutch dogs wear out because people tend to shift outboards SLOWLY. That is NOT recommended. Shifts should be QUICK and sure. NEVER "ease" them into gear.

The parts are not that expensive, but you need special tools and a manual if you do it yourself.

As DJ said you have got shot gear clutch dogs these are inexpensive and not hard to fit especially as your engine the 25 hp should have a splitable gearboxIf you are in a remote area or money is tight you can reverse the clutch dog and this will remove the problem from forward to reverse I have done this when I was living in the western Isles and parts were hard to come by.Mind and fit new seals when you have it apart.
