You really train dogs??? Welcome to iboats anyhow :D Ya otta get on dockside chat....there's a few there that really like their dogs.

Now to the problem.....

When the motor "bucks", does it feel like yer' hittin' a log?? And does it do it above half throttle or so?? If so, most likely the forward gear and clutch dog are jumping in and out because the lobes are worn. Only fix is to tear it apart and replace the dog and gear.

To be sure, hold the shift lever on the motor in forward gear with a little pressure. If it still does the "buck" thing, see the above.

Keep us posted trainer....thanks.

Welcome to Iboats, dogtrainer.

Feels like you hit a log? If so, the clutch dog is slipping in the lower unit, which is a result of wear. If the mating surfaces on the forward gear are rounded over it'll need to be replaced as well.

Seems to be a pretty common problem on those engines.

EDIT: Joe Reeves goes into it in some detail here.
