Johnson 25 will not idle without choking

I have a 1976 25 hp Johnson.It will crank and run,only if you keep engaging the electric choke.You can hit the choke switch and it will rev up and then start to die. If you hit the choke again, it will rev back up. Also,I tried to move the throttle valve(butterfly), while it was running, and it just "choked" it down. Any ideas ??

Sounds like you have a jet clogged to me. My 25 hp Evinrude did that last year. I just took the Carb off and Used somew carb cleaner in the aresol can with the tiny tube and shot through every port I could find. Finally I got the clogged one and it idled great after that.<br />Maybe someone with more knowledge will reply, with a better method than mine. Hope you get it working.<br /><br />Good Luck

Crappie has nailed it. How old is the fuel & do you have a water seperator? If not - - -
