I have recently purchased a Johnson 25HP electic start model 25EL76E
1976 motor.
I have 2 questions:

1. Lower end unit oil what viscosity is to used ?

2. I've checked on this model and it appears that is difficult to find earmuffs
or a flushing kit for this engine.
(The water bypass cover is 5 inches long by one inch high.)

Can a tube to used (connected to a hose) in to the water inflow of the lower
unit to flush it out ?
Does anyone know of attachment or kit that will work on this ?

I will be fishing saltwater reguraly

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Re: Johnson 25HP 1976 Lower end

That long plate is not the water intake, only a way for it to get water when running in reverse. The main intake is on the forward edge of the underwater exhaust outlet. Many moons ago, Tempo made a "Flushette" attachment that fit over the main intake, but they are rare now and I'm not parting with mine.

Use 80-90 outboard gear oil. Available everywhere.

Admiral

Thanks for the quick reply. I won't use the bypass area. Good on the gear oil.

Flushing followup.

The water intake (is it (small round hole relative to much larger flared area ) in the area you mentioned

Thanks

It is the screen on the leading edge. The propeller forces water into it.
