I got this last Oct I got it in the water a few times and noticed that as I tried to go a litte faster it would sound like rum rum rum(as it was go fast slow fast slow) as if it was puting along so we parked it for the nite along the banks. Well when we go out ot it the next day I gess from all the other boats moving fast in the water it hit the tree nocking the motor in the water we got it back on the boat and got it home. Then like 2 weeks later we trie to start it and it turned over fine my Q is shoud I be worried about any thing that the water may have done to it as it sat in the water? Can someone tell me what I should look for in cking it out when I get it out this Spring.

and last but not least where can I get the top for the motor we lost it to the water :(
Thanks, From Indiana

Yes it's an 89'
So the motor was submerged and you just took it home and stored it for several months. WOW. It ain't gonna start. It may never start again without putting a ton of money into it.
I wouldn't worry about the cowl right now. Ebay is a good place to get one if you ever get it running.
Do a search for "submerged" and follow the steps on how to get it running again. It might be too late but its worth a shot.
If you can't get it running I would part it out. That motor could be prone to problems.

When you say it turned over did it start?
If it started then it the power head must have not went under.

I'm not positive but I don't think you can get your existing steering to work on a 1960 motor. Those old motors had a cable pulley system to turn the motor left and right the newer motors have a tube under the front of the motor.
By your description i'm not sure what is wrong with your motor.
I would clean or rebuild the carb for starters.

Check out these links on how to get it going.

When you say you got it back on the boat and got it back home, are you saying you got it started and ran it home, or are you saying you got towed back home and it hasn't run since? Makes a world of difference.

If you got it started and ran it home, you did exactly the right thing and it probably is ok, except you may have a problem with the electric starter.

However, if it hasn't run since the swim, it probably is junk.

Thanks, Yes we got it back home and we got it running the starter started it right up we ran it about 3-5 mins. I will be pulling er out next month to try it out to see if all is till good I have been readin and maybe I have not been mixing the gas right that's why she was running rough on the water last year.
