Johnson 25hp - Question

I have just bought a 25hp 1978 rope (manual) start Johnson outboard, I have 2 questions.

1. The shaft length is too short for my boat, where can I obtain a shaft extension kit?

2. Is it possible to modify this unit to an electric start? Are there conversion kits avaialbe?

I have a 1979 25 Hp Evinrude and have failed at this point to drop lower unit to change waterpump. Is there a pin someplace in addition to the 4 bolts and a stud that holds unit in place? Is there a trick to getting unit off? I can run a .006 feeler gage about 320 degrees around the opening but it still will not drop.

did you disconnect the shift linkage? John best to start your own thread.

Gordon, there were kits for both. don't know if still available for that year, they can be pieced together.

I have managed to remove my lower unit, it was just 4 bolts, the stud and the gear selector linkage. It was very stiff - like it had never been removed before. It took a lot of gentle coaxing and persuading with a number one adjuster and a block of wood. The problem was the stud was badly corroded and stuck fast. Now it is off I have cleaned it up and greased it. I have now succesfully installed a new water pump impellor. The engine ran fine with good water flow after this.

I still am unsure as to whether I can change my rope start engine into an electric start, I cannot find any reference to this or conversion kit. Is it just a matter of buying the electric starter and bolting it on, running power to it and installing a switch?

Both kits are shown in the evinrude link posted by tashasdaddy. I just looked at them. The electric starter kit is part number 173346 and it is only $399.95. The extension kit is part number 389111 and is listed as no longer available, last price was $245.50. Needless to say, look for a parts motor.
