Hello wise motor masters! 'Just picked up a very nice 1976 Johnson 25hp tiller outboard.
I need some advice. There was an electric starter on this engine originally. Alas it's gone now, but the starter switch is still there.
Questions 1. Where is the solenoid for this starter found on the engine (not sure if it's still there or not)? 2. Would you recommend a new or used starter (i.e. considering the cost of rebuilding a used one. They're on ebay frequently - but even though they say they work . . . .Are they basically bullet proof, or are they delicate?)
3. If use, how "year specific" do I need to be regarding the starter and it's bracket (IOW, would a '73 S and B fit my 76 engine?)? 4. What would you go through and/or replace now that it's on the bench to assure a happy boating season (I'm planning a carb rebuild, new impeller, lower unit lube, and plugs to start). I also know that I need a manual soon. Kind regards,
Chris

Re: Johnson 25hp starter question revisited

Well....question #1. The starter and solenoid would have been mounted on a bracket on the port side of the block.

Used starters can be rebuilt and made very trust worth if the armature is still in good shape. Still cheaper than a new one. The starters on OB's are pretty tough. They have to be for the pounding they get.

The starters on the 25's are darn near the same for a lotta years. A few years on either side shouldn't make a diff. If unsure, give a post.

Don't forget the t-stat. Probably a component that's overlooked likely as not.

Do take a comprssion test to get an idea of the shape the cylinders are in and for future reference. Once running, give it a decarb. Can't hurt.

Take a look at the spark to. One spark won't make for happy boating.
