I am going to look at a Johnson 28 SPL outboard tomorrow. I am going to check for spark, compression and water in the lower unit. Aside from those checks what else should I look for? I don't know the year but from what I have seen it appears to me mid to late 80's. I'll check the serial number tomorrow and look up the year. Any advice is appreciated,

Test run, even on muffs is a must, good idle ? Fuel leaks? Proper paperwork ? Right price ?

Thank you for the replies. The motor was part of an estate sale. I checked out the motor yesterday and passed on it. It would have been a great deal at ($150.00) if everything had checked out. But from what I found on my initial inspection, it looked to be a major project kind of motor. Thanks again.
