i would appreciate any input since i am not a mechanic. my 1984 30 h.p. was given to me about 12 years ago and i somehow manage to keep it running,so lets try again.went out last weekend ran great. always starts right up etc. i noticed when i returned to port, i was idling and the engine just stopped. cranked it back up and tied up. went to go this weekend and it cranked, ran about 2 seconds, died. turned it over three or 4 times and it cranked, ran 2 secs and died.this is repeated for about an hour(i have a good battery).checked plugs and they have fuel on them.pulled the tubes from pump to carb and there is fuel.drained the bowl and tryed again.same.thought it was electrical but when it cranks it purrs if only for 2 secs.now im thinking float issue. Thanks for any input.

ok,carb checked out.so then i pulled the plugs again to check spark and there was.put them in and it cranked right up! left it running about 10 mins.got in untied and.....it died. pulled the plugs again and no spark. took the harness apart, looked over wiring.nothing obvious.cranked and cranked;wiggled wires;shifted shifters;cussed.put the cver on tried again and it cranked for 2 secs.like yesterday.did this 4 times, got ill, came in here to type.,whatya think tdaddy?

Re: johnson 30 will not stay running

If electric start, as with a ignition switch..... remove the black/yellow wire from the ignition switch. If the spark is now okay, replace the ignition switch.

If no ignition switch and the engine has a push button kill switch type arrangement, disconnect the wire from the push button that leads to the powerpack (normally black/yellow). If ignition is now okay, replace push button kill switch (button assy).

Let us know what you find.
