hello, i have a 35 hp johnson.i think it is a 1984.i am having problems with it.it runs ok up till around 3/4 throttle after that point it seems to boog down.my father in law used it last year and said now it wont run with the cover on it and he also said he thinks there might be water comming from somwhere up top but he could not tell alone while he is driving it.i have not used it in around 8 months.(he just gave it to me so now i want to fix it)it start in 3 pulls cold.he put new reeds in it last year.thaks richard

Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />First off, I am not an expert on your motor, but have seen this problem on other motors.<br /><br />I think you will find that the exhaust manifold gasket has deteriorated and is leaking. This is allowing the exhaust gases and possibly water to leak into the engine cowling. The exhaust gases are actually suffocating the motor. That is why it will not run properly with the cowl in place. Hopefully it is not more involved than that, but you won't know for sure till you get into it.<br /><br />I will let the experts chime in here with the specifics, but you will need a repair manual to walk you thru the repair.<br /><br />Oh yeah, this post will likely be moved from the outboard non-repair forum, to the Johnson/Evinrude repair forum.
