Johnson 35 possible prop issue...

This is on a 57 35HP Seahorse.

I think im having a prop issue...or a slipping hub or something. Goes into and out of forward and reverse fine but when you apply any power much over a fast idle, it wont go...just revs. Its still moving forward or reverse respectively, so its in gear but all the power is getting put somewhere else...im thinking the hub inside the prop is bad... You can throttle it up and feel it just start to put power down then it just suddenly but smoothly looses it all. Any ideas?

Yes I reckon your diagnosis is correct.

Confirm it by scribing a line on the end of the shaft and marks in line with it on the prop. Give it a brief run a check to see if the marks are still lined up. If they are not it confirms the spun prop.

Yep...its a spun prop...

Now, couple of questions...there is a bushing(looks like brass or bronze) inside the prop that has another rubber bushing on it. It can be pressed out. Can these be replaced(the rubber) or does it just need a whole new prop assembly?

A prop shop can fix it but I'd just look for a used one on line somewhere. But it does not hurt to investigate both.

are you sure it is a spun prop and not a shear(drive) pin, broken.

I would think if it was a drive pin broken then the prop would not move at all or slip at lower speeds also. I would go with a spun hub too.

I assume he must have taken the prop off to mark it so I'll also assume its a spun hub. This isn't a user serviceable item. Don't ask me why. If a prop shop can do it why can't I? Well the answer is... I don't know how and no one seems willing to teach me. That's my rant.

Generally, a prop shop will fix it for about $50. A new prop will cost approx $85-100. A used prop will cost anywhere from $0-40. If you take it to a prop shop they usually straighten/fix any dings or bends and paint it for you so its the next best thing to new.
