I have the opportunity to buy this for $100, in unknown condition other then motor is free and it gets spark, its a early 90's model, I have yet to go physically see it, will be going to go this weekend to check it out. are the 4hp johnsons any good and is it worth $100? I figure it will need a carb kit, impeller, plugs and gear case oil changed at the least.

Picked it up today, very clean 1994 model j4rdhere. Only issue is the prop has a broken tip on one blade so the guy threw in a very nice vintage omc metal 6 gallon tank with it. Guy got it in trade didn't know anything about outboards, reason he couldn't get it to run was he did not know what the deadman switch was. It has great compression, excellent spark, gear case oil good, So i tore the carb down when i got home and it was spotless. Throttle is stiff so i disconnected the cable and it was the armature plate, I will tear it down and clean and re lube it.

I will have to buy a impeller and do something with the prop it has about 1/2" of the tip broken off one blade. before i buy a new one i think i will cut it down and reshape along with the rest of the blades and try it out. Do any of you think there will be a big issue with doing this? the prop is otherwise in excellent shape.

ask a weld shop if they can repair/rebalance the prop or buy a new one.

reshaping your prop will end up in an unbalanced prop which will vibrate needlessly and.... possibly harm your oil seal

or.... keep your reshaped prop for emergency back up only to get you back home in case your destroy your new one :)
