Johnson 4 strokes

I've searched all over the place with no luck...did Johnson make 4 strokes in the 50-70 hp range in 1998/9...or were all those motors 2 strokes? To put things into context, I have a '98 Johnson 9.9 4 stroke and a '98 Johnson 50 2 stroke with a vro. So , I can use straight gas to fuel both. The problem is that I've had several people tell me I'm nuts if I don't disable the vro on the 50 and use premix. I want to have a one fuel fits all situation so doing that would put me out of whack. I'd ideally like to have the same manufacturer and about the same year. I'd also like to be all 4 stroke...but can't afford new 2 or 4 stroke so I'm left to look at older, servicable units. Any suggestions?

You only hear about the VRO problems, you never hear about all that works!
Be sure your alarm system works, do not run the 2-stroke VRO empty of fuel and keep on driving!
Always keep a bottle of 2-stroke oil in the boat in case of failure.

I don't own a VRO motor, but I'm curious....How do you test a VRO alarm to make sure it's working?

Run a separate tank of oil-fuel mix.
Disconnect the oil hose at the VRO and start the engine.

Will it alarm when the VRO is out of oil AND also will alarm when the tank is full, but the pump fails?

Me, the guy that doesn't know jack about it in the 1st place is not quite getting the vro alarm explanation. And does anyone know if Johnson made 50-70 hp 4 strokes in 1998/9. The bigger reason for that question is that we have restrictions on 2 strokes in both lakes and rivers. Translation: When the fish are in, 2 strokes are out! Back to the vro stuff...I'm very much the novice...that info is something I need to get a handle on so any further explanation would be great!
