Okay I just got a boat with what I would guess to be a mid 90s johnson 40 hp. The motor looks to be freshly painted and I cant find the serial nubers on it anywere. I need to get some parts for it so I can get out on the water again but its hard to do without those numbers. Any suggestiona?

i may be wrong,, but if this is an OUTBOARD motor & you can't find any tag on the block or mounts,, there should be a SOFT-PLUG on top of the motor between the head & the flywheel with the model # in it & the serial # will be there too,, if it has been painted over then you need to take paint of this soft-plug

no tag on the transom mount????? hope your motor isnt running "hot"! but as bigd says, there should be a freeze plug with #'s on it, somewhere on the powerhead. (posting pics can help narrow it down to a group of model years that share many of the same parts)
