My '85 Johnson 40 tiller is surging especially when wide open. If I continuously squeeze the bulb it will bring it out of the surging..any suggestions?

Here's some background info: I bought the motor not running right and found one of the carbs to be varnished. Soaked the carbs and added a kit in one then noticed a leak in one of the fuel lines between the carbs. Replaced all the fuel lines and used wire ties to hold them in place on the carbs and T-valves. Could the motor be sucking air from somewhere? The gas can and gas line from the can have been out in the elements for two years. Could they be bad?

thanks,
Tomo

If it has regular fuel pump, check o-rings and plastic fitting on the fuel pump that contains the small screen. The fitting split, and the 0-rings swell. there was/is a kit with fitting and o-rings. The new fitting is ok, but the o-rings swell when exposed to gas.

Are you losing your prime in your bulb? If you are replace the bulb and fuel line. Any air leak will cause you to lose your prime especially at high speeds when it can't get enough fuel. Low speeds it might be able to keep up.
