Johnson 4hp number deciphering!

I have just acquired a Johnson 4 hp model BJ4BREDS. I believe the year is 1996 but can someone explain the other letters and tell me if the engine is standard or long shaft.<br /><br />Many thanks<br />Ian in England

The model number indicates it's a standard lenght shaft, but to be certain measure from the part of the transom clamp that contacts the top of the transom to the anti-ventilation plate directly above the propeller. If you measure close to 15" then it's a short (standard) shaft, if it's 20" then it's a long shaft.<br /><br />Hope this helps!<br /><br /> RickDB1Boat's picture explains it better.
