To answer your direct question, they USUALLY will survive a dunking. Assuming you have it rinsed and dried out, use a quality ohmmeter to check the resistance between the points& condensers wire and ground (everything assembled). Resistance should be around an ohm when the points are open and zero ohms when they are closed. Some meters can't tell the difference, that's why I said "quality". If it fails the test, the points may be shorted or not making good contact.
Not meaning to be a wise guy, but how long ago did this dunking in salt water occur? If you haven't gotten it running within a day, you might not have to worry about it. Salt water is unforgiving and internal rusting starts immediatly.
