I am new to this. In checking over my johnson 4 HP, found water in the lower case oil; took off lower unit, changed both seals and O ring. Vacuum and pressure tests were OK. When It came to putting the unit back together (water Pump)with the new empeller; I was unsure to put sealeant on the pump plate and the water pump housing. All the diagrams/manuals I can find to not list any gaskets and there is no mention of sealants on the housing or housing plate for the 4 HP, but the manuals do list use of sealants on smaller HP motors. When I took the water pump apart, there did not appear to be any sealant on the parts. It just seems to make sense to have a coat of sealant on the bottom and top of the housing plate, does that make sense?

The gearcase where the plate sits must be clean and flat. Then use sealer UNDER the plate, not above. Most any kind of gasket sealer is good enough for that use. Put some on the screw threads too.

Make sure you have a good o-ring at the top of the drive shaft, and smear some good water proof grease on the splines (Moly lube preferred) Smear some oil or grease in the water tube grommet so the tube slips in easy.

thanks for the quick reply. The problem might have sounded small but it was really bugging me when I could not find anything in manuals, etc and the local Johnson dealership is no help. Thanks again for the help.
