Johnson 5.5 hp CD-20 prop cap question

I am about to install the prop on an old Johnson CD-20, and am wondering how the cotter pin keeps the rubber prop cap on. Does it pierce the rubber?

small cotterpin holds the prop in place The rubber cap goes over ,holds drive pin in place.Snaps into a grove in end of the shaft.
