Hi, on my 1955 Johnson CD-12 there is no air silencer. Am i able to run the motor without damaging the motor or is it only to reduce noise?

You can run it without the silencer, will be a little noisy.

Re: Johnson 5.5hp air silencer

ok thanks a lot for the reply i got a little worried that mine didn't look the same as others and realized it was missing something. i can get one for $15 is it worth it, not having a silencer will it affect compression?

No, it will not affect the compression. Later engines had no type of silencer at all.

not really. best just to get a new/old one. they sell them all over ebay for about $20, I think, or you could get lucky and scavenge one off a donor motor if you can find one.

tbone, id send you the silencer off my 56....for the cost of shipping, but they must be different. on my 56, it looks like the packing nut for the slow speed jet screws into the silencer, but the high speed jet (bottom) packing nut, screws directly into the carb. my 57 looks like the same set up.

Re: Johnson 5.5hp air silencer

Thanks for the help guys the things i need are parts 70 to 76. As long as the silencer OMC # is 277286 it should fit , i called laings outboards on an estimate and they had one of a 1954 and he wanted 25 with 10 shipping, i was also planning on getting the fuel tank repair kit from them as well.

Re: Johnson 5.5hp air silencer

after doing some more searching i found one of a 7.5hp that would work on mine and one of a 1960 5.5 so a lot of different motors silencers around that time would fit.

The silencers on ebay don't come with the mounting screws and range from $15-30, laings outboards said they had one of a 54 that came with screws for $35 shipped. I think i'm going with laings.
