Johnson 50 fuel pump problem?

I have a 2000 Johnson 50 HP. It recently has started to "bog down and die" while running. It will run great the whole time if you keep squeezing the primer bulb lightly while running. Is this a fuel pump problem? It's VRO but I have mixed my own gas for several years now.

Welcome to the forum!

Could be your fuel pump...and then again..could not be.

Could be pluged up carb. on the high speed circut. You could also have an air leak some place in the fuel line.

My best guess is dirty carbs. Fuel pumps almost always give a surgeing effect, before they die deader than hell.....usual in the midele of the lake as a huge thunder storm rolls in.

(they plan it that way at the factory)

Clean crabs real good....and then tell us whut happened...tu ya!

Good luck!

Chech the fuelpump pulse hose, starter rubs a hole in the hose.

I had the exact same problem on my 1990 Evinrude 25hp this summer. Again, pumping the fuel bulb would keep it running. Turned out to be a clogged fuel pickup line INSIDE the gas can. I couldn't even clear it with a few shots of carb cleaner - I'll work on that this winter. A new gas can and fresh fuel solved the problem. Hope this helps.

if it's the VRO, replace it with a# 0438559 pump, it works better for fuel delivery ( if you're mixing gas & oil in tank) than the VRO capped off.

If I am not mistaken you have an OMS pump on that model (I could be wrong so wait for someone else to respond) Fuel side is re-buildable. Make sure you have no air leaks in the system. Other option is to replace with a pre-mix pump.
