I have a manual shift 1984 50 horse Johnson and the gears are shot but I also have a 1973-1979 evenrude 50 horsepower that I think is a hydraulic shift I was wondering can I take the gears out and put them in the Johnson bottom end as I can see the impeller housing is different along with the shaft size

You'll have to figure out exactly what year g/c it is on the '73-'79 model as they were different between the yrs. Shop.evinrude.com may help you as they have good parts break downs.

If you want to get into it, the best thing to do is get an OEM factory service manual. It will show what tools you need and the proper procedures.

It is not just this engine in particular as I have just never had to disassemble this type of one piece gearcase before as most of my motors are pre 1976 I can compoletly tear down and reassemble these engines but have never had a problem with this newer style of gearcase but i will probably have to open more in the future the first retaining plate appears to screw out somehow and then you a need puller of some sort for the propshaft seal and was wondering what type of tools I'd need for this As if I bought shop manuals for all my newer Johnson's with this type gearcase I'd need to buy 10+ manuals
