Hi
I have just purchase a 50HP 1974 Johnson motor. I'm having trouble while in the water. It seems to run fine when out of the water and runs with the covers on. When in the water I have to run it with the cover off or the motor dies.
The idles mixture screws are set 1/2 a turn out at the moment.
I turned the mixture screws 1/4 out last time I was in the water and it seems to not make any difference so I set them back to 1/2 a turn. Any help will be much welcome.

Try one full turn. 1/2 is definately way too lean. Fine-tune warmed-up in the water so there is backpressure on the exhaust. Don't adjust for the smoothest idle. It needs to be rich or it'll bog and die on acceleration. Generally they need to be adjusted for smooth idle and richened by 1/4 turn.
