The engine felt very hot as i tuched it to day so I decide to test the tstat. I could not tuch it for more then 2 seconds.
I boiling water it started to open at about 150 F and was completly open at about 160F.

Does anyone know if this is ok?

Re: Johnson 50hp -97, Thermostat temp range?

Sounds roughly correct, depending on the thermostat used. I think there is a 143 degree one and another a bit higher.

I had the same "issue" thinking the motor was overheating because I could not touch it for more than 2 seconds, but this is probably normal. I confirmed proper operating temperature with the purchase on an infrared temperature gun. Motor runs anywhere from 145 - 160 throughout use range (idle to WOT etc) and that is probably fine given I have a 143 degree thermostat.

It probably is ok, but I'd get yourself one of those IR temp guns just to confirm. They are around the $30 mark for the basic ones (which do the job just fine).

Of course you should also check/change water pump impeller if it hasnt been done for a while.
