Hi iam in the middle of doing away with my vro pump and was wondering if i can please get some help in identifying some of the hoses going out of the plastic fuel distribution block on the pic. i know 2 of those lines go to the dual carbs but the other one iam not too sure of, it seems to go towards the block somewhere. Does it need to be blocked off once i remove the vro pump or do i leave it connected where its at? Also under the vro pump i know one line is for the fuel, the other is for the oil which ofcourse its obselete and and the 3rd one goes in towards the block. do i need to block this one?? I will be using a regular fuel pump bolted to the side of the block where it is suppose to go so i know i wont need a pulse line..My motor is a 1987 johnson 50hp model#J50TLCUD. Thanks in advance to everyone and if yall need other pics please let me know:D

Re: Johnson 50hp VRO fuel pump question

I just converted my '86 60hp to a conventional fuel pump but my hose setup looks completely different then your picture. Sorry
Just follow the hoses. You won't need the oil anymore. Fuel in, fuel out and pulse

I assume you have a primer, one should go to it. On the vro you should have three hoses, one in, one out, and one to the block, which is where you get the pulse.

Re: Johnson 50hp VRO fuel pump question

thanks for all the help rude1! Well from what i see the 3rd small hose on the fuel distribution block goes to the lil small black box with the red lever on the 1st pic. Then 2 smaller fuel hoses come out of the black box with the red lever and each go to the top of each carb(please look at 2nd pic). Iam assuming those little smaller hoses are for priming and the little small black box with the red lever is the primer so my question is, how do i operate the primer mechanism?? The small black box with the red lever also has wires coming out of it. someone please help and sorry for the goofy rookie questions as this is my first outboard and thanks in advance..

The red lever is a manuel primer valve. With the lever pointed forward towards bow (as in your picture) it is in the run position.
When its flipped the other way towards the back of your motor it is in the MANUAL START position, which is used when you need to pull-start your motor.

I just did the same thing, with the same motor. you need all 3 fuel lines from the distribution block. the other one goes to the fuel primer solenoid. this motor does not have a choke, it has this mechanism. I would remove the zip ties, and put hose clamps instead. the impulse line under the intake manifold thing will need to be plugged up since you have a new pulse one on the side of the motor. I would also add a decent fuel filter before the pump. the one on the motor is more of a strainer. good luck. there is also a forum thread about this in the top secret file. I would also recommend replacing all the fuel lines with alcohol resistant ones too. hope I've helped.

thanks guys for your help, since the solenoid does not seem to work now with a good battery do i just flip it to the manual position?? how can i check if it is functioning?? and yes i plan on removing the zip ties and replacing them with hose clamps and adding a fuel filter for sure. the motor came just how u see it guys:D

Re: Johnson 50hp VRO fuel pump question

To operate the primer push the key while starting the engine. The primer is a solenoid valve. When you push the key it opens so the fuel can flow to the carbs from the fuel pump. The cranking of the engine creates the pulse for the fuel pump. To check it pull the small primer hose off one of the carbs hold it out or into a container while someone turns the engine over. it should produce a stream of gas, so be careful.

with the key in the on position, and batteries connected, you should be able to hear the solenoid click when you push in the key. this opens the flow of fuel to the tiny hoses that enter the top of the carbs. I'm not sure how to check if it is working though. I would assume if the key is in the on position, and it is actuated by pressing the key in, there should be some kind of fuel start to flow out like rude1 says. I an not sure if you need to crank the engine to check it. If you have to manually crank the motor, the **** needs to be turned counter-clockwise to prime, then returned to original position once running.

Re: Johnson 50hp VRO fuel pump question

Ok fellas i have finally figured it out! i had no idea the key knob had to be pushed in to activate the primer solenoid. i disconnected the small hose on one of the carbs, flipped the key forward a bit then pushed it then i heard a click and out came the fuel!! iam currently running it with the VRO pump disabled but my regular fuel pump should be in by wednesday! thanks alot to everyone for all your help and understanding:)

I believe that hose is fuel recirculation, or something of that sort. it should go to a nipple on your crankcase then to your "airbox".

Have you put your new fuel pump on or are you still waiting on it to arrive? I only ask because i just put one on mine and it didnt come with screws, mine took TWO 2in. screws with 10-24 threads. It was no fun to have to go back to town for more parts after getting my new fuel pump.
