Re: Johnson 55 wont shut off
On manual engines a kill switch connects a short between ground and the power pack. When activated, the switch directs electrical output [originally meant for spark plugs] to ground, thereby stopping ignition completely. Key-ignition switches do the same thing, but with a bit more wiring then I can illustrate here.<br /><br />Without going too far into it, the problem could be:<br />1. Loose wire to the power pack or ground connection<br />2. Damaged key switch<br />3. Damaged power pack<br /><br />I would first check for loose wires that come out of ignition/throttle bundle and feed to the power pack and also identify the one that mounts to engine block somewhere. If those all look good, your brother-in-law is best either getting himself a good manual (if he likes working on it himself) or just take it to somebody who knows what to look for and has the electrical test equipment necessary for troubleshooting.<br /><br />That's as far as I can help here.
