I just bought a 1969 Starcraft with a Johnson 55Hp outboard 2 stroke motor I beleave to be about a 1974. The spark plugs will not fire while the starter is engaged however, the spark plug will fire just after the ignition switch is turned from "Start" back to "on" just as the motor comes to a stop from the starter.

With the spark plugs put back in, the motor will not start while the starter is engaged but does fire once or twice just after U release the key from start position. I am new to 2 stroke motors and only know the pricables behind a 2 stroke motor. I don't know anything about how the "Points" or "Magneto" works. I checked the ignition switch and it is working fine. (keeping power to the ignition teminal when in the "start" position) Is there maybe a centrifugal cut off switch or something malfunctioning that could be preventing the spark when the motor is turning fast? Any ideas U may have as to the problem would be greatly appreciated

first off, is this a 2 or 3 cylinder model...

second, whatevr it may be, disconnect the large round wire harness plug at the engine that connects to the control box. this will eliminate all chances of it being in the switch and make trouble shooting 1000 times easier.

get a small length of wire with a push button style swiitch in the middle and connect one edn to your starter selenoid and the other end to the poss terminal on your battery. use this to start the motor with EVERY thing else unplugged.

check the spark with this and let us know what happens. usually the spark does not have a "cut off point " as you put it. it will only do what you desribe if you have a short or a wire is pinched and is grounding out as the motor spins. you may have to pull the flywheel to get a looksy at whats under there
